Ahahahaha. Books.
Here are a couple of books that I have recently come across through friends, articles or the world wide web….

My sister Steph was the one who told me about this book, and I think she secretly wishes that she had a child young enough to read this to… Actually, she’s not THAT secret about it. I think her kids were with us when we looked at this online together, and read it aloud… They were NOT impressed. Well, maybe they were. They were all like “Oooh, Mom said the ‘f” word!”…. Actually I totally just made that up. I’m having trouble deciding what I want to say here, other than, I have it on good authority (Steph…..) that any new parent would LOVE this book. You can pre-order it here

Don’t get me wrong. I love NYC…… sometimes. Ok, a lot of the time. But there are also those moments, normally after I have been there for about 4 days, when I have this moment of “You know what NYC? You are just not THAT great. Shit does happen and get done elsewhere…. And by the way, you, you and you… just because you moved to NYC from your little town somewhere else, it doesn’t mean that you are a New Yorker, so lose the attitude. And furthermore, you… taxi driver… just because there NYC cab drivers are often portrayed as terrible, reckless drivers who often confuse the brakes and the accelerator, it doesn’t mean you HAVE to do that. Just drive normally. It’s actually pretty easy to drive in New York, contrary to what New York wants us to believe…. so easy on the gas.”
You can buy that book here
While I’m on the subject of funny books, I was just thinking of actual novels that I loved… so, why not. Here are a few classics that if you have not read yet, well, you should.

This novel is JUST SO GOOD. It was published 11 years after the author’s, John Kennedy Toole’s death, and won him a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Douglas Adams’ classic “trilogy” is actually 5 books, which I read in entirety during the Summer I spent “waitressing” in Banff. Waitressing is in quotations because I broke my arm after a week of working, and proceeded to spend the next 5 weeks “recovering” which entailed trips to the Beer store with any one of the other 9 people who I was sharing an “apartment” with. In fact, it was the living room of the house, with “kitchen” (wetbar), and a “bathroom” (powder room as it had no bath… or shower… We used to sneak into the YMCA to shower…). WOW.
Anyhow, during those long sunny days, I remember reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and loving it so much that I started reading parts of it aloud to my friends. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it became a ‘reading group’ or anything, because while that would make my Summer in Banff sound a little less aimless and unproductive, it would also be a baldface lie. I’m not sure if there are many people left who haven’t read at least part of this series, but if you haven’t, you really should.
Anyone have any faves of their own? It’s Summer… what better time to get a good list of books together???

you just made me laugh on a really shitty day – thanks.
